Three Unusual Signs of Depression in Men

“You think I’m depressed??”  This is usually the first thing clients say back to me when I tell them they likely have depression.  So often, men suffer from depression and they don’t realize it.  In fact, more than six million men in the US have depression every year.

They try to convince me that they get out of bed, go to work, hang out with friends, spend time with their kids, and there’s no gray cloud hanging over their head.  Yet, I still contend they’re likely depressed.  While depression symptoms aren’t any different than that for women, it is often harder to detect in men.  So what tips me off?

It usually shows up through: 1) Angry outbursts, 2) a desire to be left alone, or 3) being critical of himself and others.  Any of this sound familiar?  The good news is, you can change it, and I’ll be talking about how to do that over the coming weeks.  First though, we’ll take a look at how each of these signs relate to depression.
